Samhain audio

Samhain, which is the ancient Celtic fire festival that marked the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, is still celebrated on the last day of October. It gives its name to the Irish (Gaelic) name for the month of November.
This poem, which is taken from my first poetry collection, The Parting (2013), first appeared in the now defunct Brigid’s Fire magazine issue #4 (Samhain, 2010). It was written in Donoghmore, County Wexford in early November 1984.
This recording was made on 28 June 2020.
