Iconoclastby Patrick Stack
This recording of the poem “Iconoclast” was made by the poet in his home on 15 April 2020. The poem was composed sometime in the mid-1980s and was published in Stack’s first collection, The Parting (Amethyst Dragon, 2013).
The poem captures the bleakness of 1980s Ireland during the second last great recession caused in large part by the biggest political party at the time. With another recession now inevitable due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it feels like ground hog day all over again. Will we be shafted once more by the self-same forces of corruption at the heart of our rotten body-politic, or will we once and for all rise up and dethrone them?
